How to setup two flowpoint routers......... for use as a bridge between the ISP hookup (at the roadside) and the premises hookup (at the barn/house) by Guy R Carrier 207-784-4500 772-882-6520 772-252-9293 guycarrier@guycarrier.com www.TheWindowsGuy.com www.CarrierEngineering.com date 1 November 2011 location 959 Washington St Auburn, Maine 04210 reason The distance from the roadside to the barn/house is over 1200 feet. Road runner would NOT place a cable in the ground. There are NO telephone poles either. infrastructure I installed a 12 pair icky-pic telephone cable underground. The setup is as follows........... Road runner delivers cable internet into a large aluminum cabinet at the roadway. RR supplies a traditional cable modem at the roadway. I installed a Flowpoint 2200-12 router in the same cabinet. I installed a Flowpoint 2200-12 router in the barn/house end. The two routers are tied together via a single telephone pair from the 12 pair telephone cable underground. (Colored pair unknown). The pair is terminated on a telephone block at each end. A short 2 pair telephone cable with R on J 11 telephone jacks is used at both ends to tie the terminating jack to the DLS port on the routers. A CAT5 (straight-through) cable is placed (at the roadside) from the RR cable modem to the flowpoint router. A CAT5 (straight-through) cable goes underground to the log home to a switch where multiple computers can be hooked into the system. NOTE: The CAT5 straight-through cable must be terminated on a jack in the switch that can be reversed usually called a crossover jack. NOTE: A switch can only be tied to another switch if you use either a crossover jack and straight through cable OR a crossover cable. Any computers in the BARN where the flowpoint router is hanging can be hooked into the remaining LAN jacks available on the flowpoint router. ________________________________________________________________________________________ How to HOOK UP the routers............ This is very detailed and must be followed to the letter. NOTE: This programming will be based on the following parameters. VERY IMPORTANT The Network used will be 192.168.2.xxx VERY IMPORTANT The Subnet Mask will be 255.255.255.0 VERY IMPORTANT The default gateway will be 192.168.2.252 VERY IMPORTANT The default gateway is the LINKSYS (or other brand) router at the roadside. The hookup progression at the street is as follows........ Road Runner cable is hooked to the CABLE MODEM using COAX. The CABLE MODEM is hooked to the LINKSYS ROUTER using a CAT 5 cable. Note: this cable is a straight through cable. The LINKSYS ROUTER is hooked to the FLOWPOINT ROUTER using a crossover cable. Note: Crossover cable are usually marked CROSSOVER on a tag. The LINKSYS ROUTER (cat5 crossover cable) is hooked into 1 of the 4 stacked together ports on the back of the FLOWPOINT ROUTER. The FLOWPOINT ROUTER is hooked to the telephone jack marked DSL using a small silver looking 2 pair telephone cable using the RJ11 jacks. The CONSOLE PORT on the FLOWPOINT ROUTER is NOT used at this time. __________________________________________________________________________________________ How to PROGRAM the routers............ This is very detailed and must be followed to the letter. NOTE: This programming will be based on the following parameters. VERY IMPORTANT The Network used will be 192.168.2.xxx VERY IMPORTANT The Subnet Mask will be 255.255.255.0 VERY IMPORTANT The default gateway will be 192.168.2.252 VERY IMPORTANT Now for the programming.................. Start with two Flowpoint SDSL 2200-12 routers. The tag on the back of the router will say Model 2210. NOTE: there are various versions of the 2200 router. NOTE: Even if a router says Model 2210 on the label, it could be another version. We will load NEW Firmware into the router to make it a Flowpoint Model 2200-18 version 3.90(1) Notes: There is a HOLE (reset button) on the back of the router near the console port. The console port is NOT marked. With the power on, use a paper clip to push the reset button and hold it for at least 5 seconds. The 2nd LED will go reddish. You now have 10 minutes to reset the password AND change the IP address. Defaults: The default password is admin The default ip address is 192.168.254.254 In order to access the router programming you must have the correct password. In order to access the router you must have the correct IP address. To access the router............. using the CONSOLE port. You must have a STANDARD SERIAL to RJ45 cable. (A flowpoint cable) Note: You will have to make up this cable........... See the diagram located on the OTHER cd I made called Flowpoing information. Hyperterminal............... Windows has a communication program called hyperterminal. Hyperterminal is a very crude and low end program. (Finnikey) When you START hyperterminal.............. A windows appears........ Put the word FLOWPOINT in the box. Click OK In the next window there are 4 places to enter info. In the bottom box change the listing to a COM port. Usually you would pick COM2 or COM 3. Hyperterminal does not like other com ports for this job. Click OK In the next window ......... Click on RESTORE DEFAULTS (a button) You should end up with the following parameters....... 9600, None, 8, 1 None Click OK., You will now see a blank screen in Hyperterminal. Hit the ENTER key twice. Your should get a Login: prompt. Type in your password: admin note: all lower case Hit the key. You should get a new prompt............. Logged in Successfully! # ____________________________________________________________________________ Brief lesson in commands........................ # ? will show you the TOP-LEVEL commands # SYSTEM will show you the system commands # ETH ? will show you the ethernet port commands # eth list will show you the information for the Ethernet ports and many more............. Note: the # means that you are at an administrator level in the router. ______________________________________________________________________________ Let's begin................ Located in the box there is a BLUE CD called Flowpoint Installation Kit CD. Place the cd in your cd drive and do the installation. Take the defaults. Load ALL the software and manuals. The following steps is actually accomplished via the CAT 5 Cable. Identify each router.......DO THIS STEP NOW...................... Place a tag on one of the routers. The tag will say........................ 192.168.2.253 CO (Internet)(Roadway) The tag on the second router will say.......... 192.168.2.254 CPE (Barn/House End) To start the DSL SETUP program (once you have completed the install).......
