My business is done from the desk in my home office, from my Cargo van taking me from people’s homes around a four county area doing repairs on specialized home equipment… equipment found in 40% (+/-) of the homes within 25 miles of my home base located on the East Coast of Florida where growth in housing is the talk of the State. Note that most people who come to Florida no longer want to do their own repairs even if they know how to.

You have seen the newspapers, heard it on Television, seen it on the advertising in your mailbox, in your Emails almost every day. Florida is probably the “growingest” State in the United States. They come to Florida for the good life.

When I came to Florida over 13 years ago I was looking for a way to build an income, buy a home, work about 40 hours per week, have weekends to myself and family, enjoy the “water” and visit the state I chose to live in.

At 58 years old I was looking for work that I could do by myself doing service type work for others and yet not be in a rat race. Service work simply means that you are paid for your time and effort. That type of service work should be somewhat specialized and in demand. The fewer people doing a specialized type of work you are willing and able to do, the busier you stay and you make an income at a higher level.

As in any industry there are levels of ability from the simpler easier jobs to highly skilled troubleshooting and diagnostics jobs. You can choose the level of service you want to do depending on the industry and your interests.

In my industry of choice there are levels of work you can do. Here are a few.

Maintenance, simple repairs, troubleshooting problems, diagnostics, and installations.

And by the way, what industry are we about to expand upon? I am about to clue you into the Home Generator business. Depending upon your abilities you can build your income and more entirely around servicing the Home Standby Generator Market.

It took me 3 years to at the beginning when I came to Florida to build this business. Today you can take over my fully functioning, repeat business of servicing Generators from DAY 1. Let me continue ……..

Let me break this down into various levels of service or work based on the home standby generator.

These “levels” are not industry named areas of work around the home standby generator. They are my own ideas based on a decade of working within this industry.

Level 1 would be considered the beginning and a necessary part of the income generation.

Maintenance is required on all generators. Whether they are portables, air cooled or liquid cooled generators, it must be done and I recommend on a yearly basis repeated yearly. Maintenance includes changing of spark plugs, changing the oil and oil filter, changing the air cleaner, checking on the battery and replacing if necessary, cleaning the case and waxing the outer shell. Simple but necessary. Clearly, a portable requires less effort than a liquid cooled generator and pays a little less. A ball park idea as to your income for this work consider the following. A Portable needs a spark plug, 1 quart of oil with an oil filter and an air cleaner. You would need paper towels, an oil pan for collecting the old oil, a cleaning solution to prepare the case for a simple spray wax application. The whole job would take about 1.5 hours. Your cost for parts including the spark plug, oil, filters, cleaning solution and spray wax would be about $12.00. Your invoice would be around $150. Good deal.

An Air cooled STANDBY generator (also misnamed as a Whole House Generator) requires 2 spark plugs, 2 quarts of oil, an oil filter and air cleaner, more cleaning solution and more spray wax. It would take approximately 2 hours to complete this size generator but the Transfer Switch must also be tested as your client wants to know that when you are done the “System, as a Whole” works as it should. Additional cost to you and a larger invoice to the client. Your invoice would be around $300.

A liquid cooled STANDBY generator usually is powered by a small to medium sized “automotive engine”. Added cost to you… 4 plugs, 5 quarts of oil, filters, cleaning solution, more wax, more labor. The result is more money in your invoice. Your invoice would be around $350.

The first 5 years of building this business was mostly LEVEL ONE type work .Currently, my business services over 350 clients (yearly) who own Home Standby Generators that must be serviced yearly; a REPEAT BUSINESS year after year.

If you purchase my business and simply keep it as a LEVEL ONE type business, a REPEAT LEVEL ONE BUSINESS, you would have a stress free ongoing income year after year for the next 30+ years.

No employees, very little overhead, a cargo van to protect equipment and consumables PERIOD.

Easy going and no pressure and with an income, working by yourself pocketing all the income with no office assistant, no office space, just a small cargo van for your tools and supplies.

What about the investment? I took me 13 years to build a REPEAT business and a CUSTOMER LISTING of over 600 clients and another 600 potential customers who receive very direct post card advertising several times per year reminding them that we are around ready, willing and able to service their generator also. All of my customers and potential customers for a fact have a generator waiting to be serviced. The only way that this customer list was built was by my seeing each and every one of those Standby Generators with my own eyes. This is a real list. What is the investment you ask? $150,000.

In Florida, advertising by newsprint, television, radio, internet, knocking on doors is through the roof. You could easily spend $250,000 in one year on this type of advertising and get 10 new customers. If you watch tv or listen to radio or use the internet probably 70% of the advertising is done by lawyers. Wow !

Level 2 would be considered the next step and an important part of solid income generation.

Level 2 is where I include Troubleshooting and Diagnostics.

Most auto mechanics of yesteryear (1950 through 2000) will tell you that it takes 2 things to make a combustion engine run. Spark and fuel. We have simple tools for testing spark and fuel. It is relatively easy to learn this type level of testing. Add a great teacher and LEVEL TWO is a breeze to learn.

If you are a serious person looking for a solid future income in a simple specialized field of work, you should appreciate that the more knowledge you have, the stronger your REPEAT business is. To be “in demand” you would build your knowledge in simple small engine understanding as to function and how small engines work. Add a great teacher and you too can diagnose and troubleshoot a small engine.

Level 3 would be considered the next step in truly knowing all about generators, the why and how of generation of electricity for the home and small business

Level 3 is where you become the guru to your client. It’s one thing to change out spark plugs and check to see if you have fuel in the tank. It’s quite another to know WHY the spark plugs are not firing and even if there is fuel in the tank, WHY is it not getting to the “carburetor”? Add a hands-on teaching book, experience by doing, add a great teacher, become certified by the leading generator manufacturer by attending their 2, 3 and 5 day classes where you get the theory, hands-on experience right in the class room alongside other students wanting to know more about their field to become the a REAL CERTIFIED FIELD TECHNICIAN in your community.

Even in Level 3 you can select just how proficient you choose to become. What’s the investment? It’s the same $150,000 to begin with. Manufacture’s classes cost about $200 per day and worth every penny. You can take one per year or you can schedule yourself for 2 classes per year. You should know that in order to keep up with the latest technology in generation, you need the classroom time each year at this level. You still get to choose.

Level 4 would be considered the deciding whether you choose to GROW your business with employees, heavy equipment, inventory and participating in a franchise.

Level 4 is for a someone who has big ideas like having 3 to 10 trucks with his name on them. Having 3 to 10 employees who do the work and where you get to be “the MAN”. This is where you must plan ahead for finding “MONEY” to back your level 4 plans. Is it possible? Absolutely. If you are a 35 to 55 year old and you piss fire and have access to money or have made a ton of money through using the previous levels identified earlier….. GO FOR IT !

If Level 4, considered to be INSTALLATIONS and REPLACEMENTS, is where you want to be at this time in your career then you should know that my CLIENT LIST aka Customer List has better than 600 names and addresses of clients with OLD and TIRED Standby Generators. Imagine a DIRECT CONTACT LETTER CAMPAIGN that would cost you about $1.10 per piece delivered, putting your name in their mind that it’s time to consider replacing their electrical and air conditioning source of energy to keep them watching TV, and cool while they sleep even if Florida Power messes the bed.
